In the upcoming movie Kick-Ass (due in theaters on April 16th), we follow ordinary people who, for one reason or another, decide to become costumed superheroes … even though they have no real powers whatsoever and some of them don’t even know how to throw a punch. After watching the film, I’m sure some folks out there will wonder whether people like this exist – real-life costumed avengers who patrol the streets of your hometown in an attempt to keep everyone safe and secure. Bad news is … yes, people like this do exist, and though your first instinct will be to laugh, these real-world superheroes want you to know that what they do is no laughing matter.

In advance of Kick-Ass arriving in theaters this week, the New York Post profiles a couple of these costumed crusaders in a video that follows them to the streets of the city at night to take on tasks like … providing homeless people with toothbrushes, and telling drug addicts to leave Washington Square park (a local hot spot for drug dealers) because they’ve called the cops. With names like “Life”, “Dark Guardian” and “Cameraman” (because he carries a camera and records their adventures, natch), these costumed tough guys seem to care more about helping those less fortunate than actually fighting crime (which is good, because five minutes in a bad neighborhood would get these kids killed for sure).

Check out the video below and let us know what you think. Are these real-life costumed superheroes good to have around, or nothing but a big joke?
