Video game adaptations don't have the greatest track record, but Michael Fassbender is looking to do something about that with this December's Assassin's Creed, a big-screen adaptation of the popular game about a badass assassin whose wicked skills span centuries.

A new trailer for the film has arrived, detailing more of its heady story about a criminal whose death is faked in order for him to enter into a secret program that puts him in the mind of his ancestor, an assassin from the time of the Spanish Inquisition who's been dead for 500 years.

What immediately elevates this video game adaptation above others is its strong cast, including Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. The action looks fierce and unique, too, and while we don't yet know how Fassbender's mission long ago will connect to his tasks in present day, the back-and-forth angle -- coupled with a mysterious program that allows users to access the mind of their ancestors -- should present a fairly inventive experience for folks to devour when the film arrives in theaters on December 21.

That's only five days after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, mind you, so those two should put up a fun battle at the box office right at the end of the year.
