If there's one actor in Hollywood who's on a heckuva hot streak right now, it's Jake Gyllenhaal. He is in what you'd call "a zone" in terms of his role choices and performances, dialing it up a notch for each one -- from End of Watch to Prisoners to Enemy to the fantastic, shoulda-been-Oscar-nominated Nightcrawler, the dude is killin' it right now.
And here comes Southpaw, in theaters July 11.
The first trailer for the Antoine Fuqua-directed film feels a bit like a Rocky movie at first, with Gyllenhaal playing a banged-up boxer with a chip on his shoulder whose family wants him to slow it down before things are taken too far.
And then...yeah, things are taken a bit too far, leading to a family member's death, an estranged relationship with his young daughter and a boxer who's desperately in need of a second chance at it all.
Watch the trailer below.
As you can see from the image and trailer, Gyllenhaal got pretty ripped for the role, and his intensity just oozes throughout the entire trailer. This feels like a darker and grittier version of a later Rocky installment, one that examines the tolls boxing takes on the mind and body from a much more visceral and emotional place.
In other words, we can't wait.
What do you think of the trailer?
