Assassin's Creed

Imagine waking up one day and being told you're dead. That's what happens to Michael Fassbender in the first trailer for Assassin's Creed, the video game adaptation that's heading to the big screen later this year.

It's a little different than what we had imagined after seeing the promotional photos for the film earlier this week. Fassbender stars as Callum Lynch, and as the trailer begins he wakes up and is informed by Marion Cotillard that he was executed the day before. Watch the trailer below to see what happens next.

The official synopsis had hinted that Callum Lynch would be experiencing the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th-century Spain, thanks to a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories. Now we know more specifically that Lynch/Aguilar will be set forth during the Spanish Inquisition, a fearsome time of torture and trouble for thousands of people.

The new trailer features hordes of soldiers engaged in battle, as well as plenty of hand-to-hand combat, not to mention a liberal use of arrows and other deadly pointed weapons. It also includes a considerable amount of death-defying leaping, which makes us wonder how much director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) will incorporate such computer-game moves into the epic warfare we'll see.

Look out for Jeremy Irons in the opening minute as a mysterious figure overseeing Fassbender as he wakes up after being "executed." Michael K. Williams and Brendan Gleeson also star. Check out the new poster below. Look for Assassin's Creed when it fights its way into theaters on December 21.
