Facing a crossroads in her life, Kristin (Toni Collette) flies to Italy in Mafia Mamma so she can attend her grandfather's funeral. Her quiet suburban lifestyle changes drastically when she learns that she has inherited the family business, which just happens to be a criminal empire. Under threat from murderous rivals, Kristen must quickly adapt, for the sake of her own survival, and that of her new "family."
To help Kristin learn the rules of the game, Bianca (Monica Belucci) explains things to her as they stomp grapes. As part of her instruction, Bianca refers to a character in a classic gangster movie. Kristin's innocent and honest response, however, manages to alarm everyone, especially two armed guards.
