Unlike co-star Daniel Racliffe and Rupert Grint, Emma Watson hasn’t attempted to carry a feature film outside of the Harry Potter franchise. She appeared in a small supporting role in My Week with Marilyn, and is currently filming The Bling Ring for Sofia Coppola. But before that comes out, Watson will try to explain The Perks of Being a Wallflower for writer-director Stephen Chbosky.

Based on Chbosky’s best-selling novel of the same name, Wallflower casts Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) as Charlie, a protagonist writing letters to an anonymous recipient to describe his experiences at high school. Watson plays Sam, a beautiful senior who enters a relationship with Charlie. The movie also co-stars Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Mae Whitman and Kate Walsh.

Though the book has a strong following, most audience members likely will check out Wallflower to see Watson in a non-Hermione role. And to tease that very fact, here’s the film’s first official trailer.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower opens on Sept. 14, 2012. What do you think so far?
