Elf

Want to spend December with a mix of holiday favorites and the best new releases? Vudu has something for every mood and interest, including lots of titles on sale, and I’ve got plenty of recommendations for movie marathons and TV series binge-watches among them. Here is your monthly guide to the latest deals.

What are some big deals Vudu is offering for the holidays?

The holiday season has arrived, and Vudu is merry and bright with sales this December. At Holiday Central, you can find many specific deals under the umbrella of their Holiday Film & TV Sale. All your festive favorites are included, from all-time classics It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street to modern essentials like the Will Ferrell comedy Elf and (of course it counts) Die Hard.

Don’t forget the franchise staples Christmas Vacation, Home Alone and The Santa Clause, all of which are also available in bundled collections with their sequels. Visit the Holiday Bundles Sale to find those and other special groupings. For example, you can pick up the “Naughty Holiday” pack, with Bad Santa, Bad Santa 2, Surviving Christmas and Office Christmas Party.

Speaking of movies that make us laugh, you can easily find funny films this season all spotlighted together in the holiday comedies section. Here are my double feature recommendations: Scrooge with Scrooged for some dark humorous takes on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; and the original Home Alone with the horror-comedy Better Watch Out for holiday home invasion antics.

Find more genre picks in the horror and suspense section, including the original Black Christmas, and in the romance section, which features rom-coms and beloved classics such as White Christmas, Holiday Affair and Christmas in Connecticut. Visit the family film section for these personal must-haves: A Christmas Story, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Santa Claus: The Movie.

For virtual stocking stuffers, the sale also has a bargain bin section with a number of movies priced at just $4.99 or less, including Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer. Also a section for Lifetime holiday movies priced as low as 99 cents and a section for Hallmark Channel selections for $4.99 each. Plus the latest Mix & Match deal focuses on Winter Holidays: buy any two titles for just $9.99.

If that’s not jolly enough for you, there will also be a 48-Hour Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Sale beginning on December 24. Who doesn’t love to spend the holidays with their family watching movies together? No need for a yule log burning in the fireplace because these deals are going to be hot enough to warm you up quicker than an ugly Christmas sweater.

What are the favorite holiday movies in each state?

Not sure what you should buy from the Holiday Film & TV Sale? For one idea, check out which holiday movie is set in your state. Connecticut has Christmas in Connecticut, and Home Alone obviously represents Illinois. Tyler Perry’s home of Georgia has A Madea Christmas. As for New Hampshire, they’ve got a Hanukkah movie: Adam Sandler’s animated Eight Crazy Nights.

All of the titles on the map below are available on Vudu, of course, from Die Hard and Sleepless in Seattle on the West Coast to Holly Star, Deck the Halls and November Christmas in the Northeast. Also, Ernest Saves Christmas down in Florida, Jingle All the Way up in Minnesota and Fatman over in Alaska. Feel free to buy movies set in states other than your own, too.

Will Vudu continue the holiday deals after Christmas?

Rounding out the month — and the year — Vudu has another big deal to ring in the next. The New Year’s Eve Weekend Sale will actually begin on the last day of 2021 and continue the savings into 2022. While the titles offered in that sale aren’t announced just yet, let me just highlight some of my favorite movies involving New Year’s Eve: Trading Places and Phantom Thread.

Will Vudu be spotlighting the best movies and TV shows of 2021?

Speaking of the end of the year, Vudu will also have a Years Best Movies Sale this month showcasing, well, the best movies of 2021. What will be among the favorites of the year? I can only name my own picks for now, and they include Pablo Larrain’s Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, and Pig, starring Nicolas Cage. Some bigger movies such as A Quiet Place Part II are also featured.

Other contenders with a lot of end-of-year buzz include the new Vudu releases Dune, Belfast and The Last Duel. Of course, we can’t forget the most popular movies of 2021, namely Free Guy, F9: The Fast Saga, The Suicide Squad, No Time to Die and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Black Widow, plus Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

What must-see new movies are coming to VUDU in December?

Many of this month’s new releases are unknown as of yet, but December will see the debut of some big movies on Vudu, a few of them arriving on digital for the first time after their theatrical runs. First up, Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical coming-of-age drama Belfast, which looks to be a major Oscar contender, premieres as a Theater at Home VOD rental title on December 2.

One day later, on December 3, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune hits Vudu. The adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel follows a regal family, led by Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson and Timothée Chalamet, as they relocate to a desert-based planet where they’ll mine an important natural resource called “spice” while trying to avoid deadly sand worms and intergalactic warfare.

Mid-month, a number of movies for a variety of audiences make their way to Vudu. Halloween Kills, the latest horror sequel involving the masked menace Michael Myers, is expected on December 14 with a never-before-seen Extended Cut available. The same day, you’ll be able to check out Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, featuring an ensemble cast in a compilation of vignettes.

For younger viewers, Clifford the Big Red Dog, based on the beloved children’s book franchise about an oversized canine, is also due on December 14. That will be followed a day later, on December 15, by the sci-fi animated feature Ron’s Gone Wrong. And you can currently pre-order all of the upcoming movies listed above — and more — ahead of their release dates.

Can you recommend some more great movie and TV deals on Vudu this month?

December brings more than just the holidays, and that goes for this month’s deals as well. Over the final weeks of the year Vudu will have sales spotlighting movies and TV series with inspiring underdogs and titles featuring martial arts action. There will also be sales on modern sci-fi movies and television, rotten movies we love, and 4K UHD editions of your favorite movies.

And there’s sure to be plenty more. Be sure to visit Vudu and this guide to keep up with everything going on in December and check out our weekly Vudu showcases every Tuesday.
