Power Rangers

We're still in the middle of the summer movie season, but it's never too soon to speculate about next year's big releases. In that spirit, we have advance looks at two movies that tackle familiar subjects from fresh perspectives. As a further point of interest, the movies are both scheduled to open on the same date in 2017.

First adapted for the U.S. market in 1993, Power Rangers draws from its Japanese inspiration to tell a story of young people who transform into superheroes. The movie stars Becky G., Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler and Dacre Montgomery as a new team of five teenage rangers.

A new photo (above) via Entertainment Weekly showcases Trini (Becky G.), also known as the Yellow Ranger, as she battles the villainous Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). Repulsa intends to conquer Earth, but the rangers object, leading Repulsa to try and take them down one by one.

Power Rangers is singer Becky G.'s first film role. She says she was nervous before shooting the fight scene pictured above, but when Banks walked onto the set "in full Rita Repulsa costume, I’m like, 'This is gonna be so easy, because she looks so real!'"

The movie will open in theaters on March 24, 2017.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Dozens and dozens of movies have been made about the legendary British leader King Arthur and his adventures, so how will Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword stand out from the crowd? Two new photos, published by Entertainment Weekly, give us a clue.

“He’s a bit rough around the edges, but he’s basically a survivor,” says Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim), who stars as Arthur. “There’s definitely a harder edge than people would imagine.” That becomes apparent from a new image (above), which shows Arthur looking somewhat battered and beaten as he stares into the distance. Arthur's chief adversary in the movie will be his uncle Vortigern, portrayed by Jude Law. In the photo below, he looks quite imposing.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Historically, Vortigern was a warlord in the fifth century who only became villainous in much later fictional accounts. In the upcoming movie, he is responsible for murdering his brother Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana). Naturally, that turns Arthur against him, though Vortigern has the advantage of magical powers.

We'll see how all this plays out when King Arthur: Legend of the Sword arrives in theaters on March 24, 2017.
