First Sean Connery retired way too early, then Joaquin Phoenix ditched acting to become some sort of weird, bearded rapper – and now Viggo Mortensen chatted up the possibility of his departure from Hollywood after a busy week of promotion that had him in Los Angeles, Japan, Korea, Poland and the UK. According to various sites online (including News24.com), Mortensen talked about his dizzying schedule by noting that he’s "taking measures to change that … no more movies."

The star of all three Lord of the Rings films, as well as A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Appaloosa and the upcoming highly-anticipated adaptation of The Road is arguably at the top of his game right now, with Hollywood practically shoveling more and more work onto his doorstep. Sadly, though, according to Mortensen most of the offers came for movies that were "complete crap" and "all about product placement and marketing." He added: "I haven't said yes to one in over a year ... there are other things I want to do. It's not the right time. I don’t need the money."

Yikes…tell that to the several thousand struggling actors out there begging for even the smallest role in any movie, let alone the kind of films Mortensen stars in. So will he officially quit acting? Does this mean there’s no chance of him reprising the role of Aragorn for one or all of The Hobbit films? We’ve already lost one sensational actor this year (when does Joaquin Phoenix’s rap album debut again … and do any of us really care?) – please don’t let us lose another.

What do you think: Would you be sad to see Mortensen leave acting?
