Whether in a high-rise building or a middle-American bungalow, no room is safe from well-choreographed Hollywood violence. Even the bathroom -- a place you'd hope you could get a little privacy.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit continues the action movie’s fascination with restroom fisticuffs, proving that you don’t need Krav Maga when you have a shower rod and running water. (skip to 1:00)
To celebrate the new thriller’s release today, here are some of the genre’s greatest bathroom brawls.
True Lies
Water flies everywhere and people smash face-first into sinks and urinals as Ah-nuld turns the lobby bathroom of a Marriot into an insurance adjuster’s night terror. James Cameron’s excessive action-comedy makes a strong case that more – nay – all fights should end with heroes slip-n-sliding for their guns to make the kill shot.
Eastern Promises
Viggo Mortensen and his distracting junk (new band name – called it!) turn Russian Mobsters into toe tags in David Cronenberg’s 2005 film. This fight makes True Lies look like waiting in line at the DMV.
Jack Reacher
Jack Reacher knows how to handle himself in a fight, but his greatest achievement is watching hapless thugs accidentally beat the piss out of each other. Take note, movie fans: If you are ever being hunted by bad guys, just duck into a bathtub and wait. They’ll eventually start beating themselves up with the baseball bat that was meant for you.
Fatal Attraction
If you find Glenn Close in your commode wielding a butcher knife, get out fast and take your bunny with you.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
“Who does Number Two work for?!” Proof positive that, contrary to current science, the guy behind The Love Guru was once indeed funny.
Psycho
While not a fight scene in the traditional sense, we would be remiss if we didn’t give a shout-out to the movie that’s arguably responsible for making bathroom MDKs popular. Hitchcock’s classic turns the shower into one of the scariest things a person could ever do; and that shrill, iconic music just makes it scarier.
Casino Royale
Royale marks Daniel Craig as James Bond’s first foray into the fine art of battle ramming guys through toilet stalls. This gritty fight ups the ante by giving the popular spy one of his best and most disturbing moments. (skip to 2:25)
Goldfinger
Not a bathroom in the traditional sense, but the room’s centerpiece is a bathtub, which Bond uses to “electrifying” (see what we did thar?) effect to take out a vaguely European goon. Shocking indeed, 007. (action starts at 3:56)
Pulp Fiction
It’s your classic setup: a milkshake-loving hit man, fresh from his trip to Royale with Cheese-land, goes to the bathroom and gets shot by a boxer who looks a lot like Hudson Hawk. (Vincent gets it at 3:25)
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
How do you top the T-800’s wall-punching, face-smashing smackdown with the T-1000 in T2? You don’t. But a check-plus for trying, T3. We especially liked the bit where the T-X gets her bell rung with an incoming urinal.
Liar, Liar
And finally, we have Jim Carrey kicking his own ass in a courthouse men's room.
