While summer is already in full force for Hollywood, the upcoming three-day weekend officially kicks off the season for most Americans. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, millions of people will be taking some sort of vacation, many of them in the form of a road trip. And of those making the drive, tons are taking cues from their favorite movies.
Fandango recently polled more than 1,000 film fans to name the movie that "inspired them to head out on the highway." While the top pick is an expected one -- National Lampoon's Vacation -- the rest of the list of 50 titles includes some surprises, such as the runner-up placement of the much more serious Thelma & Louise.
The picks go back as far as 1934's It Happened One Night and the list features stuff as recent as last year's Grandma and, yes, the Vacation reboot. There are two Best Picture winners, a good mix of kids' classics like The Muppet Movie and acclaimed grown-up indies like Sideways, and even a movie appropriately called Fandango.
All 50 movies are now available to stream on Fandango's new VOD service FandangoNOW in the curated "Road Trip Movies" section. To see the full list, visit FandangoNOW here. The first 25 are listed below.
