Turkey and stuffing was washed down with Twilight and Skyfall over the Thanksgiving weekend as the top two blockbusters on the box-office charts held off a bevy of holiday newcomers.
Even Lincoln prevailed over the Thanksgiving weekend openers, suggesting audiences were more content to catch up on films they’d already heard about but hadn’t yet had time to see.
Breaking Dawn blasted past the $220-million mark over the holiday weekend, adding $43M to its totals. It has surpassed the original Twilight film, but still has a while to go before it tops The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300M) as the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
Skyfall is right behind with a grand total of $221.7M in the bank after its $36M Thanksgiving haul.
As opposed to Twilight, Skyfall now ranks as the highest-grossing Bond film of all time, blowing right past Quantum of Solace and its $168.3M haul.
But what happened with the new releases? Rise of the Guardians attracted the most attention by pairing the holiday titans Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy in one animated, 3D adventure. Guardians earned $24M over the weekend, narrowly edging out Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, which earned $22M.
And after a brief, limited opening, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook expanded to more theaters and managed to crack the Top 10 with an impressive $4.6M take. The Oscar contender has posted $6.4M to date.
