Remember trolls, those ugly-cute little dolls you had as a kid... the ones with the wild, multicolored hair and distinctive, beauty-is-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder facial features? They're getting a new movie called -- well, Trolls, and it stars Justin Timberlake as the cynical Branch and Anna Kendrick as perennial optimist Poppy.
Six years in the making, this film from DreamWorks Animation gives the iconic creatures a decidedly modern twist. During a recent interview, directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn were joined by Kendrick, Timberlake and producer Gina Shay to talk about bringing this mythical franchise to life. Here are eight fun facts they revealed about Trolls.
1. Justin's plan: Timberlake serves as executive music producer for the film, a first for him. His objective was to "take these classc toys and mythological creatures from so long ago and really modernize them with the music. Some seven year old is going to walk away knowing 'The Sound of Silence.'"
2. Storytelling with music: The singer-songwriter-actor wrote four original songs for Trolls. "My job was to put our own spin on it, make it sound unique… like it belonged in the scene, much like musical theater," Timberlake said.
3. Playing all the hits: The filmmakers went through 1,000 songs to find the ones that specifically fit the film, which meant hours and hours of listening. "It had to fit the story. It had to fit the tone of the movie and it had to have this everlasting feel," Mitchell said.
4. So many trolls: There is an entire universe comprised of different kinds of trolls. Some of the most unique include Fuzzbert, who is all hair and feet, Biggie (voiced by James Corden), the captain of the group who has a little worm that he dresses up in hats for photos, and conjoined-twin fashionistas Satin and Chanel (voiced by Swedish electro-pop duo Icona Pop).
5. More troll trivia: As part of their research for the film, the filmmakers visited people with extensive collections of troll dolls. Mitchell noted one of the most interesting dolls they happened upon was a "funky, freaky giraffe with a troll head on it and a '70s cap," which ended up in the film.
6. Not just another doll: It was important for the filmmakers to keep the iconic features that characterized the dolls. "We [retained] their bellies, their stumpy legs, and some of their heft [to] make sure they didn't turn into Barbie dolls," Shay said.
7. What would Cyndi say?: One of the standout songs in the film is a modern approach to Cyndi Lauper's song "True Colors." Timberlake admitted some apprehension about taking on the classic. "I was very nervous, to be honest. I remember the whole time I was doing the recording session [and] was like, what is Cyndi going to think?"
8. All that glitters: One of the filmmakers' biggest challenges was creating the ‘90s glitter troll. "The computer couldn't understand glitter. We always say there's this room somewhere where these guys have lab coats on and they're throwing glitter," Dohrn said.
The movie also stars the voices of Russell Brand, Gwen Stefani, James Corden, John Cleese, Christine Baranski and many more, with music by Timberlake, Stefani, Ariana Grande and others contributing original songs.
