Tom Hanks in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"

With awards season in full swing, there are always a few movies that sneak through as dark horses. The Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is one of those films, with its Hugo-esque mystery-adventure layered over the backdrop of the 9/11 tragedy. The movie opens limited Christmas Day and expands January 20.

Meanwhile, on the completely opposite spectrum of the movie (and awards) spectrum is the Chris Pine vs. Tom Hardy action romance This Means War, in which the two play rival CIA operatives who spend a bunch of taxpayer money to take out their opponent while courting Reese Witherspoon. Yeah. This gem opens up February 17.

Finally, getting back to awards favorites, A Separation which won best feature, actor and actress awards at this year's Berlin Film Festival, opens December 30. The movie was also chosen by the National Board of Review as the best foreign film of the year.
