Drew Goddard earned an Academy Award nomination for writing the big-screen version of The Martian and has a number of other notable credits in the past. So that has made us very anxious to see his new film, Bad Times at the El Royale, and it's finally here.
When it was first announced in March 2017, the premise was not revealed. Over time, we've learned a bit more, though part of the dynamic thriller's appeal is the mysterious connection between seven strangers. What's it about?
Here's the official synopsis from 20th Century Fox: "Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell."
Who's the writer/director?
Drew Goddard. He started his entertainment career as a writer on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and also wrote episodes of Angel, Alias and Lost. He wrote Cloverfield and then made his directorial debut on The Cabin in the Woods, which he cowrote with Joss Whedon. He created Daredevil for Marvel and Netflix. He's also directed two episodes of TV's The Good Place. Last year, he was named as writer and director of the Deadpool spinoff movie X-Force.
When does it open in theaters?
Fox will open Bad Times at the El Royale nationwide on Friday, October 12.
