Take a break from watching your new digital copy of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and go see its star, Kaya Scodelario, in her next release. The actress plays the titular role in The King’s Daughter, a fantasy adventure exclusively showing in cinemas starting this weekend. Pierce Brosnan portrays her father, King Louis XIV, who kidnaps a mermaid (Fan Bingbing) in an effort to become immortal. The movie co-stars Benjamin Walker, Oscar-winner William Hurt and Oscar-nominee Rachel Griffiths.
After swimming with sea creatures in 17th century France, head to 19th century America for Redeeming Love, a romantic drama set in the Old West. Abigail Cowen (I Still Believe) and newcomer Tom Lewis star as young couple facing obstacles in their relationship set amidst the California Gold Rush of 1850. This Christian-themed Western is based on the 1991 historical romance novel of the same name by Francine Rivers and is directed by Disturbia helmer D.J. Caruso. Famke Janssen (X-Men) co-stars.

The Batman runs the longest: Warner Bros. has unveiled the runtime for The Batman, and the upcoming superhero blockbuster will evidently be the longest Batman movie yet. At 175 minutes (or 2 hours and 55 minutes), the Matt Reeves-helmed DC Comics adaptation tops even Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which was the previous record-holder for the Caped Crusader at 165 minutes. However, it’s still shorter than Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, which runs 181 minutes. The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson in the title role, opens on March 4, 2022.
Bong Joon Ho to direct Robert Pattinson: Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho has announced his follow-up to his Best Picture-winning movie Parasite. Deadline reports that Bong is in talks to write, direct and produce an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s upcoming sci-fi novel Mickey7, and Robert Pattinson (Twilight, The Batman) is in talks to star. The book is about an expendable employee on a colonizing space mission who is continually cloned each time he’s killed during the dangerous trip.
Denzel to be The Equalizer again: Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has revealed his next project is likely to be a threequel. In an interview with Collider about his latest starring role, in The Tragedy of Macbeth, Washington said he has to get in shape in order to “start beating people up again” in The Equalizer 3. The third franchise installment of the TV series adaptation has a script and he’s scheduled to reprise his role as vigilante action hero Robert McCall. Director Antoine Fuqua is also expected to return.
Alison Brie joins Freelance: Speaking of action movies, the comedic feature Freelance has cast its female lead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Alison Brie (How to Be Single) will join The Suicide Squad’s John Cena for the story of a mismatched pair who find themselves attempting to survive a military coup. Brie will play a journalist with Cena in the role of an ex-soldier providing security for her trip to interview a dictator. Taken helmer Pierre Morel is directing the picture.
Pete Davidson enters The Home: Speaking of actors in The Suicide Squad, Pete Davidson will star in a horror thriller from the creator of The Purge. Deadline reports the SNL regular, who also starred in The King of Staten Island, will fill the lead role in The Home, playing a new hire at a retirement facility where the staff and residents “harbor sinister secrets.” James DeMonaco, who wrote and/or directed most of the installments of the Purge franchise, will take the helm of this feature, which he also co-wrote.
James Wan to produce Thread: Another thriller in the works is coming from another horror franchise staple. According to Deadline, Saw and The Conjuring co-creator James Wan will produce Sony’s Thread, which will be the directorial debut of screenwriter Jeremy Slater (2015’s Fantastic Four, Marvel’s Moon Knight series). Slater is also writing the movie, and while its plot is a secret, it’s being described as Back to the Future meets Aliens.
