The Week in Movie News: Blumhouse to Remake ‘Black Christmas,’ First ‘Doctor Sleep’ Trailer and More

Blumhouse is remaking Black Christmas: The 1974 holiday horror classic Black Christmas is being remade again, this time from Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures with Imogen Poots starring and Sophia Takal (Always Shine) directing. The movie is set to release on Friday the 13th this December.

 

Kevin Hart to star in Scrooged: Speaking of classic Christmas movies being remade, the 1988 holiday comedy Scrooged, starring Bill Murray in an update on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is also set for a redo. This time, Kevin Hart is producing for Paramount and will likely star as the TV executive visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, according to The Hollywood Reporter

 

Will Smith to finally work with a black director: Will Smith will portray the father of tennis icons Serena Williams and Venus Williams in the biopic King Richard, which has just tapped a director. Monsters and Men helmer Reinaldo Marcus Green will make the movie, and it turns out, as pointed out by IndieWire, he’s surprisingly the first black director Smith has ever worked for.

 

Bill & Ted sequel casts Kid Cudi: In their long-awaited next outing, Bill & Ted will not only face the music but also music star Kid Cudi. Deadline reports the singer and rapper has been cast in an undisclosed role for the second Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure sequel, titled Bill & Ted Face the Music, which has just begun production for a 2020 release.

 

Sam Rockwell to star in Atlanta Olympics movie: Clint Eastwood is getting his movie about the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing off the ground. Variety reports Sam Rockwell has been cast in the biopic, titled The Ballad of Richard Jewell, while The Hollywood Reporter revealed I, Tonya and BlacKkKlansman breakout Paul Walter Hauser will play the title role.
