The Week in Movie News: ‘Aladdin’ Sequel in the Works, First ‘Little Women’ Trailer and More

BIG NEWS

Disney confirmed Aladdin 2: Disney is in early stages of developing a sequel to this year’s hit live-action reimagining of Aladdin. Producer Dan Lin told SyFy Wire it won’t be an adaptation of The Return of Jafar but the best possible story for the characters is currently being worked out.

 

Searching sequel announced: Another movie announced for a follow-up this week is the computer-screen thriller Searching, which Sony picked up at Sundance last year and released to worldwide success. Deadline reported the news on the sequel, which will involve the same creative team but a new story and characters. 

 

UFC fighter joined Fast & Furious 9: In other sequel news, the ninth installment of the main Fast & Furious series has cast UFC fighter Francis “The Predator” Ngannou in a secret role, according to Deadline. He will join franchise regular Vin Diesel, returning villain Charlize Theron and fellow newcomer and athlete-turned-actor John Cena.

 

Shari Headley to return for Coming 2 America: Deadline also shared confirmation that Shari Headley, who played love interest Lisa McDowell in Coming to America, is reprising her role — now the Queen of Zamunda — for the sequel, Coming 2 America, along with her onscreen father, John Amos. 

 

Henry Golding to star in Snake Eyes: Paramount is moving forward on a solo G.I. Joe movie focused on the character Snake Eyes and is talking to Henry Golding about starring, according to Variety. The movie, simply titled Snake Eyes, is currently slated for release in October of next year.

Last Christmas brings holiday cheer: Speaking of Henry Golding, Universal teased the holiday season with the charming first trailer for Last Christmas, in which he stars opposite Emilia Clarke. Watch the holly, jolly spot for the upcoming romantic comedy below.

 

Little Women looks lovely: Also arriving at Christmas this year, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women dropped its first trailer this week. Check out the spot for the adaptation, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and Laura Dern below.
