Like all great action-movie duos, Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw started out as mortal enemies. In The Fate of the Furious, they're a perfect pair, classic unlikely partners who once tried to kill each other but now have to team up for a greater good. Played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, they exhibit terrific chemistry in the new movie, enough that Universal is interested in giving audiences more of them. Exclusively.
While Hobbs and Shaw are expected to return for the ninth Fast and the Furious installment, we could be treated first to a spin-off involving just those two characters, Deadline reports. Will they continue to get along for some new mission or will they wind up fighting again? Maybe a little of both? Certainly some more trash talk between them. Regular Fast and the Furious writer Chris Morgan will be starting on a script soon.
Not only does this allow the studio to keep the franchise alive beyond the rumored final two sequels, but it's also a way to isolate two of the most popular characters (and actors). Perhaps other spin-offs could follow. There's already a campaign for one featuring the killed-off characters Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot) set before their deaths. How about another one with the bickering duo Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson? And who wouldn't love to see a movie staring Statham alongside Luke Evans and Helen Mirren focused on the Shaw family?
