Hitting theaters with a 4K restoration re-release is Paprika, the last film made by visionary director Satoshi Kon. This mind-bending anime thriller is about the chaos surrounding a stolen machine that therapists use to enter their patients’ dreams, and the young woman therapist, Paprika, who can stop it. The film opened to critical acclaim in 2006 and is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a strong Popcornmeter score as well.
A top five vote-getter in our most anticipated January release poll, this movie is a sequel to the 2018 thriller Den of Thieves, with cast members Gerard Butler, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Meadow Williams and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson all reprising their roles. In fact, this one picks up right where the first left off, with Butler’s Sheriff O’Brien character still hunting Donnie Wilson (Jackson Jr.), who has escaped to Europe and is planning another big job. Like the first movie, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was written and directed by Christian Gudegast, who also wrote the Butler-starring London Has Fallen (2016).
The Last Showgirl, another high vote-getter in our poll, stars Pamela Anderson as a glamorous showgirl who must face a new reality when her show abruptly closes after 30 years. The film was directed by Gia Coppola – granddaughter of Francis Ford – and also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd and Jason Schwartzman.
The Last Showgirl premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is already Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It's also building awards season buzz, having received two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Anderson.
Hard Truths comes from legendary director Mike Leigh, who reunites with Marianne Jean-Baptiste from their Oscar-nominated 1996 film, Secrets & Lies. This time, Jean-Baptiste plays a depressed middle-aged woman in London whose close relationships are falling apart, including the one with her upbeat sister, played by Michele Austin. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wolf Man was the top vote-getter by a good margin in the Fandango survey of most-anticipated January releases. This supernatural horror film is a reboot of 1941’s The Wolf Man, and was directed by Leigh Whannell, who has been writing and directing some great horror movies over the past 20 years. The cast includes Christopher Abbott, from the show Girls and the movie Poor Things (2023), and Julia Garner from the series Ozark and the forthcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with Jason Blum and Ryan Gosling producing.
In Wolf Man, Garner and Abbott play a San Francisco mother and father who take their daughter to the father's recently inherited childhood home in rural Oregon, where an attack by an unknown creature turns Abbott's character into something unrecognizable.
Better Man is a semi-biographical musical film about British pop singer Robbie Williams -- but with a bit of a twist, as Williams is portrayed as a chimpanzee with the help of a motion-capture performance by Jonno Davies and a dose of CGI. The film was co-written, directed and produced by Michael Gracey, best known for directing The Greatest Showman (2017), and follows Williams’ life from his start in a popular boy band to his success as a solo artist, as he faces the challenges that fame brings on. This top seven vote-getter in our poll premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in August, and is currently Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
This buddy comedy stars Keke Palmer and SZA as friends and roommates who lose their rent money, resulting in some extreme adventures to try and avoid getting evicted. One of Them Days was directed by Lawrence Lamont and produced by Issa Rae, and features familiar faces like Maude Apatow and Katt Williams supporting the red-hot Palmer and the Grammy-winning SZA.
This suspense thriller was the third-highest vote-getter in our poll of anticipated January releases. Mark Wahlberg stars as a pilot/hitman who is transporting an Air Marshal, played by Michelle Dockery, and the fugitive she's escorting, played by Topher Grace, over the Alaskan wilderness. Flight Risk marks Mel Gibson’s first directorial effort since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
This psychological thriller stars Lucy Liu, Julia Fox and Chris Sullivan, and tells the story of a family that moves into a new home in suburbia where they become increasingly convinced that they are being haunted by someone or something. The film was directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh of Erin Brockovich (2000) and Traffic (2000) fame, and written by blockbuster screenwriter David Koepp, who also penned Jurassic Park (1993) and Panic Room(2002).
Directed by Damian Harris and featuring his brothers Jared and Jamie Harris, this drama follows a homeless teen named Nate, played by Nicholas Hamilton, who is taken in by a popular drama teacher (Jared Harris). The hard journey they go on reveals a dark secret or two about Nate's past.
Not much is known about the plot of this psychological thriller, other than Warner Bros. writing the tagline: “You are cordially invited to experience a new kind of love story.” Companion, another popular choice in our poll, stars Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend. It was written by and is the feature directorial debut for Drew Hancock, best known for creating and/or writing TV series such as My Dead Ex (2018) and Suburgatory (2011).
This animated action/adventure is based on Dav Pilkey's children's graphic novel series of the same name, and is a spin-off of the story-within-a-story of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017). The voice cast includes Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd and Ricky Gervais, with director Peter Hastings providing vocal effects for the titular character.
