It's an honor just to be nominated, right? Well, then, this is the truly biggest day of the year for Hollywood and many of the stars and movies of the previous year. The nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced this morning, via live stream, and as expected La La Land led the pack. The film is tied for the record with 14 nominations.
Other records: Six black actor/actress nominees is the most ever for one year. There are two black screenwriters for the first time. Meryl Streep also keeps pushing her record number of acting nominations up, today earning her 20th.
On first glance, a lot of the categories filled up as everyone knew they would. Some surprises, however, include Mel Gibson getting another Best Director nod for Hacksaw Ridge, Amy Adams not being nominated for Arrival, Amazon getting a Best Picture nomination before Netflix and nominations for critically panned genre films Suicide Squad and Passengers.
We'll all be poring through the list throughout the day (and until the big night) discussing our favorite choices, as well as those nominations that shocked us the most, for good and bad, and of course the biggest snubs.
