You know how it is with these social networks: Once they become super popular, it's just a matter of time before Hollywood shoves its way into our sandbox and makes a mess of things. That's apparently what the upcoming Terminator Salvation had in mind when it recently launched the first ever viral, movie-related Twitter game – asking fans to communicate with one another through the ever-growing, bloggish-based social network in an effort to decode secret Skynet transmissions.
According to a press release, players of this new game "earn points through timely assistance in decoding these messages and, with these points, rise in rank within the Resistance Army. Players must constantly be on guard against the machines, which periodically and randomly choose a number of players and penalize them a percentage of their points. A companion blog augments the information within Twitter and hosts a leader board for the game."
I'd like you to believe that I'm totally hip to this online viral stuff (all the rules memorized, hold a spot in the top ten – you know, a cool kid), but the sad reality is … I'm not. And while this game sounds like it could be a rad time (especially since the robots don't kill you or harvest your organs in the end), it might be a little too soon to expect folks to jump onboard and go to town.
If you're interested in learning more about the new Terminator Salvation Twitter game, check out this Twitter account and navigate your way over to this website. Between the two, hopefully you'll be able to figure it all out … unlike old man me. Now turn down that music!
Terminator Salvation is due in theaters on May 21.
