Superhero movies have some of the most iconic scores -- from Superman to The Dark Knight -- but they're also no strangers to pop music. Just look back to Prince's contributions to Tim Burton's Batman and Seal's hit "Kiss from a Rose" from Batman Forever, to Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott's "Hero" from Spider-Man. But the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy was a whole new animal in terms of giving moviegoers and fans an enjoyable collection of classic tunes supplementary to a great movie.
Of course, the Guardians music is significant to the plot of that Marvel Comics adaptation. The same is true of at least a couple of the pop music tracks in Deadpool. It looks like Suicide Squad will follow in those movies' footsteps, if the just-released song list is any indication. It's unknown if any of these tunes will be integral to the characters or story, but it is clear that Warner Bros. is making further effort to give us a different, hipper DC extended universe installment than previously with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The Suicide Squad tracks range from older favorites like Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," War's "Slippin' into Darkness," and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was already used popularly for one of the movie's trailers, though for the actual film the song has been covered by Panic! At the Disco. See them perform it live here:
Original contributions include an obviously Joker-centric song called "Purple Lamborghini" by Skrillex and Rick Ross. Many fans of the dubstep DJ have already heard him play the track live in concert, but a music video, likely starring Jared Leto, is expected to arrive on July 1.
Another new song is "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots, which you can hear in the video below featuring clips from the movie.
And here are some preexisting tunes, Grace and G-Easy's cover of "You Don't Own Me" and Eminem's "Without Me":
