As an update to our previous story, Deadline is reporting that, as rumored, Steven Spielberg has chosen the adaptation of Robopocalypse as the next film he will direct. Production will begin in January of 2012, with Disney’s Touchstone releasing the film in 2013.

Steven Spielberg
The screenplay for the film – which itself is based on an upcoming novel by Daniel H. Wilson --  is being written by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), and the story is said to follow the human race after a robot uprising. Sounds a lot like the Terminator films (or, to be more specific, Terminator Salvation), though with the Cloverfield dude writing it, one imagines it might hit a little closer to home and take a more realistic, relatable approach. Plus, with Spielberg involved, expect solid characters and a whole lotta heart.

Seeing him take on this sort of big, effects-heavy epic means the next Indiana Jones movie (if it happens) could be way off. Either that, or Spielberg won’t direct it and will instead executive produce. Either way, with the mega director wrapped up through 2013, Indy fans should expect to wait awhile before the man in the fedora returns to screens.

Are you excited for this, or are there simply too many robot-related movies arriving in theaters these days? Did Transformers tire you out with the whole robots attacking earth thing, or are you still hungry for more?
