Just as one Star Wars movie is released, another is revealed to be in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Logan writer/director James Mangold is now making a standalone Boba Fett spin-off. This would be another Star Wars Story installment, like Solo: A Star Wars Story, which hits theaters this weekend.
Mangold is currently working on the screenplay and then will direct the presumed prequel, which will focus on the popular bounty hunter character seen in the original Star Wars trilogy. The last we saw Boba Fett, he was being swallowed by the Sarlacc in the Great Pit of Carkoon in Return of the Jedi. In materials since made non-canon, the character had turned out to have survived.
This isn't the first time we've heard of a solo Boba Fett movie. Back in 2013, Disney and Lucasfilm announced one was in development, naming Josh Trank as director the following year. This was to be the second non-Skywalker Saga "anthology" installment, following Rogue One. But then Trank was revealed to have left the project, which was seemingly cancelled - or, apparently, just postponed.
It's unknown how much of the idea behind Trank's movie will be carried over. We heard that his movie might have taken place over the years of the original trilogy, from the bounty hunter's perspective. We'd follow Boba Fett before and after his appearance in Star Wars then leading up to his pursuit of Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back.
In the years since Trank's departure, rumors have circulated about Jon Favreau and Matthew Vaughn helming a Boba Fett movie. Another rumor that made the rounds claimed the young Han Solo movie would also be the Boba Fett movie (which is not the case, at least not with Solo). THR notes that Simon Kinberg was most recently rumored to be involved in a Boba Fett movie.
There's now speculation that because Kinberg and Mangold worked together on Logan that they're now possibly collaborating again for the Boba Fett spin-off, with Kinberg co-writing and producing. Fans of their darker episode of the X-Men franchise with an older, more dramatic portrayal of Wolverine should be hopeful that their approach to the iconic bounty hunter will be similarly gritty.
Presumably, Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story will not be the next spin-off installment to hit theaters. There's expectation that Disney and Lucasfilm are going into production on an Obi-Wan Kenobi prequel spin-off with Ewan McGregor in the next year for release in 2020. That movie is set to be helmed by Stephen Daldry.
