Though the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot doesn’t hit theaters until May 8, that’s not stopping folks from immediately moving forward on a sequel. Variety tells us that Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof will write the screenplay for the follow-up, with everyone tentatively eying a summer 2011 release. Currently there’s no word on whether Abrams will direct another installment, but if he doesn’t I’m sure that job will be given to one of his Bad Robot cronies.

Orci and Kurtzman, in case you’re not aware, are the go-to writers for big flashy supernatural sci-fi blockbusters these days. They’re the duo behind the new Star Trek, as well as Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Mission Impossible 3 and, on TV, they helped create Fringe. Lindelof, meanwhile, was a co-creator of Lost and helped produce this first Star Trek installment. Essentially, you’re getting three great commercial storytellers who are sure to deliver an entertaining product.

As far as the sequel’s storyline goes, everyone is sorta waiting for fan reaction before they get to work. Kurtzman says, "Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month." So pay attention to what you like and don’t like about this Star Trek reboot because the filmmakers will certainly be paying attention to your feedback.

How excited are you for this new Star Trek film? And based on the footage you’ve seen so far, is there anything that immediately pops into your head as needing to change for the sequel?
