Ideally, spring break is a time for college students to take a break from their studies and have a little harmless fun. In some places, however, it's turned into an annual bacchanal with an undue emphasis on sex and suds (of the alcholic variety). The latter is what has clearly inspired some filmmakers to add a dose of blood and gore to the formula. Here are a few recent examples, running the gamut from scary to silly on the suspense-o-meter.
Piranha 3D (2010)
Party hearty! The spring break mood is set with music, a lot of dancing, and a lot of skin exposed to the healing rays of the sun. The spring breakers have not yet learned that they will be the main course when thousands of hungry piranha are set loose.
The Ruins (2008)
It's only when they go down an abandoned well that Jena Malone and Laura Ramsey discover the true, malevolent nature of the Mexican ruins where they've been stranded on what should have been a fun side trip on the last day of their spring break.
2001 Maniacs (2005)
Mayor Robert Englund invites three young college men on spring break to be the guests of honor at his town's annual "Guts and Glory Jubilee." Little do they know that it's their "guts" that will be the centerpice of the celebration.
Girls Gone Dead (2012)
Warning: this movie may be hazardous to your intelligence! Now, to be fair, the movie is so forthright in its intentions to mix raw exploitation elements with a loose horror premise -- most notably the more naked side of spring break -- that it's difficult to mistake it for anything other than what it is. Still; you have been warned.
Avalanche Sharks (2013)
There is absolutely no reason why you can't go to someplace cold, snowy, and isolated for some spring break downtime. Actually, skiing and hot tubs sounds like a welcome change from overcrowded beaches. Except for the ghost sharks that haunt the slopes; they're kind of a bummer, especially because they like so much to chomp on people.
