In case you don't know, James Cameron's Avatar had its premiere in London last night while the film simultaneously screened for critics (including myself) across the United States. So what's the verdict? Is the marketing right, and will this film really change the way we watch movies forever?

My Quick Two Cents: While I don't think it will blow your mind or change the way we watch movies, I do think that James Cameron has created a beautiful (and at times awe-inspiring) work of art that simply must be seen in 3D in order to fully experience the ridiculous attention to detail and rich, complex textures of the fictional planet of Pandora.

Watching Avatar was one of my most enjoyable moviegoing experiences of 2009, and I'm confident everyone will find something to love in this movie – despite the fact that its story and dialogue is a touch weak and sloppy, and positioned to attract as wide an audience as possible. What Cameron has created is special, unique and original, and in this day and age where every other movie is based on a book or a remake or a re-imagining, we should applaud those who still find original material a worthwhile venture.
Grade: A

And here's what others are saying about Avatar:

"The King of the World sets his sights on creating another world entirely in Avatar, and it's very much a place worth visiting." – Variety

"Cameron's latest is scary and exciting and entertaining as hell, even if it's far too early - and too conventional in too many ways - to herald it as any kind of masterpiece." – Cinematical

"The screen is alive with more action and the soundtrack pops with more robust music than any dozen sci-fi shoot-'em-ups you care to mention." – The Hollywood Reporter

"It's a world, not to give too much away, that Cameron clearly fully intends to return to and further explore. When he does, our bags are already packed." – Empire

"AVATAR is not the kick-ass, mind-blowing James Cameron movie I was hoping for, but it's a perfectly serviceable sci-fi adventure that's well worth seeing." – JoBlo
