If you're at all familiar with Saturday Night Live, then you probably already know their fairly popular sketch called MacGruber, starring Will Forte as a moronic 1980s Macgyver-type who never seems to successfully diffuse a bomb before it blows up. In later installments, Kristin Wiig came on as Vicky, MacGruber's sidekick and love interest.
Variety now tells us that both Forte and Wiig have signed on to star in a feature film based on the MacGruber character, with Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillipe also in talks to join the cast. MacGruber will mark the latest film to be born from a Saturday Night Live sketch, the last of which was a disappointing version of The Ladies Man back in 2000. SNL has a long history of creating films based on their own played-out sketches, and all of them – with the exception of Wayne's World – pretty much bombed on arrival.
Could MacGruber (which I personally couldn't stand after the second time he popped up on the show) be different and deliver more laughs than previous big-screen SNL creations? What do you think? Are you a fan of MacGruber? And what's your favorite film based on an SNL sketch?
