Aging used to be an issue for movie stars, particularly women. But not anymore, thanks to digital wizardry that can make any person appear as young or old as needed for a role. We've seen de-aging done for flashbacks as far back as X2: X-Men United and witnessed it in Marvel's Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War. And we've seen it work in prequels and other movies that need a certain character to look as they did decades ago, namely TRON: Legacy, Terminator Genisys and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Soon we may get to add an Alienprequel to the bunch.
According to an interview exclusively in the print magazine Empire, Alien director Ridley Scott, who has also helmed the prequels Prometheus and the upcoming Alien: Covenant, is not ruling out bringing back a young Ripley for a future installment set before the original. As in featuring a digitally de-aged Sigourney Weaver. "You could do that," Scott says. Presumably, it would just be a cameo, though. Nobody has used the de-aging effect for much more than a brief moment.
It's possible that the Alien prequels will eventually lead into the 1979 Alien plot, similar to how the end of Rogue One connects with the beginning of the first Star Wars. Alien opens with the crew of the Nostromo, including Ripley, being woken by a distress call. Would we see the other end of that call and what occurred leading up to it? Also, if we see Ripley wake up in Alien, when would we really need to see her in a de-aged scene? Perhaps Scott would show an alternate angle or new scene from when she wakes?
In the Empire interview (seen clipped by Bloody Disgusting here), Scott says there will be two Alien prequels after Covenant "before linking up with the original." Does that mean the second of those two would make the connection or a third that is the link up? "Right now we've got a 10-page synopsis," he says, "And we know where we're going with it," adding that Covenant screenwriter John Logan is continuing with these movies, too. He says we'll also be seeing more "different mutations" of the aliens.
