Even though Tom Hanks is about to watch the first two Toy Story movies hit theaters (again!) in 3-D, followed by the much-anticipated Toy Story 3, the actor -- who provides the voice of Woody the wooden cowboy -- still doesn’t seem to be done playing with toys on the big screen. Variety reports that Universal will develop a live-action film based on the vintage 1960s Mattel action figure Major Matt Mason – who, as the mythology goes, was the leader of an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. (Hmm, someone jealous he never got to voice Buzz Lightyear?)

Mattel used this toy as a tie-in to the first manned moon mission, then retired it in the 1970s. As Variety notes, Major Matt Mason is just one of several toy-based projects Universal is working on, including a Stretch Armstrong film, and three more based on the Monopoly, Candyland and Ouija board games.

I don’t know, part of me feels they’re reaching a little by turning all these toy properties into movies – but I guess there’s room to tell an original story if you bring on the right creative people. What do you think? And which of those projects sounds the most (and least) appealing?

That New 'Robin Hood' Movie Announces Its Full Cast

Not sure if you’re aware or not, but Ridley Scott (Gladiator) is making a new Robin Hood movie. Yup, the guy in green who robs from the rich, gives to the poor and woos some chick named Maid Marian. You got it. The project was delayed for awhile because of script issues, but it's back on track with Russell Crowe playing Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian.

As far as story goes, they’re pretty much sticking with the classic version that has Robin arrive in Nottingham, fall in love with Marian and form a group of marauders in an attempt to take out the sleazy and scheming sheriff. Here’s what the rest of the cast looks like, as production has just started in the UK (via Slashfilm):

• Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Atonement) as John and Richard’s mother, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine
• Mark Strong (Body of Lies, Stardust) as King John’s vicious henchman, Sir Godfrey
• Oscar Isaac (Che, Body of Lies) as King John
• Léa Seydoux (13 French Street, Inglourious Basterds) as the woman who will become queen, French Princess Isabella

Robin’s band of men:
• Scott Grimes (ER, American Dad) as Welshman Will Scarlet
• Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma) as Robin’s right-hand, Scotsman Little John
• Alan Doyle as their troubadour, Irishman Allan Adayle

'Where the Wild Things Are' Gets a Trailer

It’s been a long time coming, but the debut trailer for Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are has finally arrived online (watch it here). Based on Maurice Sendak’s classic book, Wild Things follows a boy named Max who, after causing a stir and being set to bed without dinner, magically transports himself to a new world full of fantastical creatures called Wild Things. Woohoo! This looks rad.

What do you think? Where the Wild Things Are hits theaters on October 16.
