Whether you're a mega football fan or just a fan in general, there's something to relate to in the upcoming indie dramedy Big Fan, written and directed by Robert Siegel. Similar in tone to The Wrestler (which Siegel also wrote), Big Fan stars comedian Patton Oswalt as a lonely parking garage attendant who's one love in life is the New York football Giants – or, more specifically, their star player Quantrell Bishop. So what happens when our boring sports fanatic accidentally gets beaten up by his favorite football player? I'll let you imagine the possibilities as I direct you toward the film's first trailer.
In my review from Sundance, I said this about Big Fan: "This isn't a comedy about the goofy football fan who gets off on chanting and screaming his team's name; it's instead a cold, lonely drama (with brief moments of awkward humor) about the neurotic football fan who'd give up everything (and I mean everything) to see his team make the playoffs." Big Fan hits theaters on August 28th.
'Baywatch' Runs to the Big Screen in Its Hot, Comedic Bathing Suit
Not long ago there was talk of an actual Baywatch movie, based on the old TV show about lifeguards who save lives and look super hot at the same time. Remember? Both Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra were made famous because of this show? Well, the first script turned in was heavy on action, and now Variety reports that Paramount has trashed that version and replaced it with a script from Jeremy Garelick that beefs up the comedy.
According to Garelick, he wanted to see a Baywatch movie that was more in the vein of comedies like Police Academy and Stripes; a film that centered on two "unlikely lifeguard candidates" who wind up working alongside the buff, the tanned and the ultra sexy. I have to say the idea definitely has potential, and I'd much rather them play up the absurd angle than try for a straight-up action flick. The only question now is which former Baywatch stars will return to make cameos?
Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Pick 14 Movies to See Before You Die
Over at their site Funny or Die, Will Ferrell and his sometimes creative partner Adam McKay have picked 14 films they feel you all should see before you die. And I agree with a whole slew of them, like Tron, Goodfellas, Airplane, Rear Window and Election. That said, I'm surprised these two comedy mavericks didn't add a little more classic funny to their list. Here's a little intro from both men:
"I cannot dispute any film that Adam put on this list. They are all gems. That having been said, I have put together an auxiliary list that if watched, might make you say to yourself, "Wait a minute...I'm glad I watched these before I died, as well!" - Will Ferrell
"I made a point of not putting in Jaws, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas or any of the movies that are on every human being's top ten list. These are movies that I have seen 20 times each. There's also a slight chance you haven't seen every one." - Adam McKay
What do you think of their list? And was it a good idea not to include any of the movies they made together?
