Recently we heard a rumor that Samuel L. Jackson might be joining the cast of Captain Marvel alongside lead actress Brie Larson. Now Deadline has confirmed the report that Jackson will be making an appearance as Nick Fury (above in The Avengers).
Jackson last appeared as Fury in Avengers: Age of Ultron back in 2015. The Academy Award-winning Larson was first touted to play Captain Marvel in June 2016; Marvel confirmed the news during Comic-Con last year. We've learned a few other things about the movie so far.
Who is writing the screenplay? Do we know the premise yet?
We know that the titular character is a pilot named Carol Danvers who gains superhero powers when her DNA "is fused with an alien after an accident." Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are currently writing the screenplay, based on the Marvel comic books.
Who will direct? Is it someone with superpowered experience?
After months of speculation, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were named as directors in April. The filmmaking team is known for their independent movies such as Mississippi Grind, It's Kind of a Funny Story and Sugar, but clearly they pitched an approach to Marvel's first female-led superhero adventure that impressed Marvel head Kevin Feige.
Who will star besides Larson and Jackson?
Good question! Our answer, unfortunately, is that we have no idea. It's still early, though, which brings us to our next question.
When will it be released?
March 8, 2019.
But I want to see Captain Marvel now!
We do too! The character has been rumored, though not yet confirmed, to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, which is due on May 4, 2018. Could she appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp, scheduled to make its theatrical bow on July 6, 2018? Filming will begin this month, so we'll have to wait and see.
