Now that we know Daniel Craig is back as James Bond, at least one more time, we can start speculating on the plot of the 25th installment. Or maybe we don't need to, because apparently a plot synopsis has been leaked!
The New York Post's Page Six has acquired some details from a source regarding the screenplay by also-returning writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. If you're familiar with the 007 books and movies, this premise won't seem too surprising, either. The rumor:
“Bond quits the secret service, and he’s in love and gets married.” The source continues that “his wife then gets killed,” bringing Bond back into action...“The film’s like Taken with Bond,” says the source, who adds that the suave spy is trying to avenge his wife’s murder.
Presumably, Bond marries Lea Seydoux's character, Madeleine, whom he is still with at the end of the previous movie, Spectre. Then she is killed, maybe by Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), and our hero goes on a personal, rogue mission to kill him. Currently it's unknown if either Seydoux or Waltz are returning for the sequel.
While Bond is typically a bachelor, he does marry in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and there his bride is also quickly killed -- by Blofeld. But, spoiler alert, that happens at the end of the movie. This would be more like similar spy movies Mission: Impossible III, which has Ethan Hunt married at the start only to see his wife kidnapped, and The Bourne Supremacy, which kills off Jason Bourne's love interest from the first movie. There's also License to Kill, where Bond avenges his CIA pal Felix Leiter's wife's murder.
There might still be time to change the plot of Bond 25, but there really is no need to. The leak reveals a spoiler of set up and premise, not full-on plot or execution. As noted, a lot of these movies are basically the same in story anyway. Fans will still want to see how it all plays out.
Bond 25, as it's tentatively titled, will arrive in theaters on November 8, 2019.
