In the real world, Dwayne Johnson is probably an excellent person to have around in the event of a disaster. He's huge, so he can lift rubble and pry open elevator doors. He's smart, so he won't send all the survivors off to die in some dumb plan. And he's funny, so you'll at least laugh will the world collapses around you.
In the movie world, though, Dwayne Johnson is basically the only person you need to have around in the event of a disaster. He's a superhero without any superpowers. Earthquakes, car crashes, monsters, you name it, Johnson can survive it. And soon we'll be able to add another challenge to the list, thanks to Skyscraper, in which he plays a man fighting through a futuristic skyscraper to save his family trapped on the top floor.
This isn't just a simple The Towering Inferno rehash, though. There's apparently a lot more going on, as per the official synopsis:
"Dwayne Johnson plays a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Ford, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line."
Skyscraper will be written and directed by his Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber. There are no other cast members attached at this point, but it does have a July 12, 2018 release date. Here's what Johnson had to say about the project:
