The movie’s Rio, and while it doesn’t exactly dance on the sands – OK, Duran Duran fans, I’ll stop now – it will spawn a sequel that’s due in theaters on April 14, 2014. Though that seems like an eternity from now, with movies like Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, Epic and Turbo crowding the marketplace, the team behind Rio 2 assume this was as good a time as any to let folks know that the sequel is coming. Here’s your first look, courtesy of The Sun UK:
Rio, which came out in 2011, was a surprise hit for Blue Sky Studios and Fox, banking nearly $500 million in worldwide ticket sales.
Those kinds of numbers guarantee you a sequel, and so original stars Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, Leslie Mann and more will suit up for a second chapter in the story of birds Blu and Jewel.
The word on Rio 2 is that it will tie into next summer’s World Cup tournament, being held in Rio de Janeiro. Very little of that makes it into the above tease, which is basically just dancing birds and a veiled threat by Jemaine Clement’s sinister bird, Nigel.
Here’s the synopsis we have on file from the studio. We’ll expect to hear more in the coming months. But there’s a teaser, so the ball is rolling on Rio 2.
Blu (voice of Jesse Eisenberg) and his family take flight for the Amazon after Jewel (voice of Anne Hathaway) decides their children should explore the world. Meanwhile, the overprotective father grows concerned that his family will leave him once they've experienced life in the wild. Tracy Morgan, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, George Lopez, and Leslie Mann reprise their roles in this sequel from director Carlos Saldanha and producers John C. Donkin and Bruce Anderson - the creative trio behind the original 2011 hit.
