A post like this probably isn’t very fair this week, seeing as Star Trek is poised to drop in pretty spectacular fashion. Even so, X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened to extremely large numbers last week and will definitely be sticking around this week to give those boys and girls from the Starship Enterprise a run for their money. Also in wide release opposite Star Trek is an urban action comedy starring Donald Faison and Mike Epps. But let’s back up and take a better look at this week’s offerings.

Star Trek
What's the Scoop: J.J. Abrams and his band of merry fanboys have arrived to reboot the Star Trek franchise so that there’s more action, more suspense and hotter stars. Their debut go-around follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise (including Kirk and Spock) on their very first mission as cadets in training.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: This is the most accessible Star Trek film in the franchise’s history, and, as such, fans should devour this summer spectacle from the moment it hits theaters.

Next Day Air
What’s the Scoop: Two bonehead criminals deliver a package of drugs and think they’ve hit the jackpot, only to set off a chain of events that changes the lives of ten other people.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: While it’s definitely a great example of counter-programming, Star Trek is just too big and too fan-friendly for this smaller, niche release.

Before you vote, know that Star Trek currently accounts for a whopping 91% of Fandango ticket sales – making it pretty much a sure bet to win the weekend. Perhaps the real question, then, is this: Will it beat Wolverine’s box office score from last week?
