Temperatures and leaves are falling, making it the perfect season to throw on a sweater and snuggle beneath the big screen with your sweetheart. Bad news: there’s no rom-com on the menu for fall. But there's still plenty of drama, adventure and fun to be had at the movies. Check out these nine suggestions.
For couples who like a heavy dose of "sci" in their "fi"
The Martian. Matt Damon stars as an astronaut who is stranded on Mars with only 31 days of supplies. Unfortunately, it would take years for a rescue mission to reach him. This fish-out-of-water survival tale is part Interstellar, part Castaway and part MacGuyver, giving you a whole lot to discuss on the ride home. In theaters October 2
For couples who are dreamers
The Walk. I love Mission: Impossible movies because they tell you in the title what they’re going to do: propose something IMPOSSIBLE and then prove it POSSIBLE. While Tom Cruise may really be hanging from a wire or clutching the side of a plane, it’s still Hollywood magic. The Walk is a true story about a real person using their real skill and ingenuity to pull off what all reasonable people would believe is impossible: illegally connecting a wire between New York’s Twin Towers and then WALKING across it, 110 stories high. Now, that’s real magic! In theaters October 9
For couples who are the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in square holes
Steve Jobs. One of the most inspirational movies I’ve ever seen was Jobs, with Ashton Kutcher playing the Apple founder. This new version jazzes things up with a cast and crew known for collecting Academy Awards PLUS Seth Rogen in an unexpected turn as Steve Wozniak. See this movie with your bae and, **BOOM** what CAN’T you two do? Perhaps, just perhaps, change the world? In theaters October 9
For couples who find horror romantic... or romance horrific
Crimson Peak. Guillermo del Toro, the director known for making terror such a beautiful experience in films like Pan’s Labyrinth, is behind this gothic romance. It features a love triangle, hidden agendas, gorgeous period costumes and a house that actually breathes. Your relationship will look a lot less complicated… and so will your home. In theaters October 16
For couples who like sure things
Bridge of Spies. I could spark your interest by explaining this is a true story that occurred during the Cold War about the U.S. lawyer who agrees to represent an American who was spying for the Russians and then how he is recruited by the CIA to rescue a pilot and how that all affects his family… BUT, that’s not really necessary is it? It's Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. You’re going to see this film anyway, so you and your honey might as well see it together. In theaters October 16
For couples ready to relive their childhood.
Jem and the Holograms. This is an ideal date for women whose formative cartoon-watching years were in the late '80s. While boys were busy watching Thundercats, girls were wrapped up with a group of female rockers living the ultimate fantasy: wearing glitter makeup every day. Not selling you guys? How about this: it’s payback. Your girl sat through both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies with you. In theaters October 23
For couples who love the Food Network as much as they love movies
Burnt. What better choice for dinner and a movie than a movie about dinner? If you two loved Chef, 100 Foot Journey and Ratatouille, you and your sweetie will enjoy this savory drama starring Bradley Cooper as a brilliant egotistical chef who destroyed his career with drugs. The couple whose mouths water together, stay together! In theaters October 23
For couples who think Halloween is hilarious
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Sure, you could go to a haunted house. Or get ghostly with Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension. However, this R-rated comedy may appeal more to parents since the only group who can survive the infection are the teens who paid attention to their scoutmaster and vowed to always be prepared. It promises the laughs of Superbad with the zombie action of The Walking Dead – scouts' honor. In theaters October 30
For couples who like their secret agents shaken, not stirred.
SPECTRE. Bond movies are instant classics and a great choice for couples. For the guys, it’s gadgets, stunts, chases and women whose brains are big as their… other body parts. For women, well, there’s a reason 007 always gets the girl(s). SPECTRE offers something other Bond films don’t: a look into this secret agent’s life story. Now that's revealing. In theaters November 6
