Awhile back, Pixar thought it might be a good idea to follow the Disney model and begin making some direct-to-DVD sequels and spin-offs for some of their films. The first movie they were going to make a direct-to-DVD sequel for was Toy Story 2, but then John Lasseter took over and changed things around a bit, putting the brakes on the whole direct-to-DVD plan and turning Toy Story 2 into a big-screen feature.
Now, though, times have changed, and it seems Pixar's tone has changed too. Movieline reports that Pixar is currently developing a Cars spin-off called Planes that would eventually go straight-to-DVD. Why the change of heart? Well, Pixar seems to be embracing sequels a lot more than they used to these days, with Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and a sequel being planned for Monsters, Inc. With Cars 2 arriving in theaters next year, it's a smart move to use the hype around that film to then release a spin-off on DVD. Pixar knows the kids will devour the sucker, and so it's a win-win.
If we know Pixar, they'll probably set up the spin-off in Cars 2, and then release the Planes movie on DVD six months later to capitalize on the lucrative kiddie direct-to-DVD market. Question is: Can Pixar keep up the same high caliber of quality for a film that's going directly to DVD? Disney wasn't able to do it, churning out iffy sequels for The Lion King and Cinderella, to name a few), and so all eyes will be on Pixar to see if they can maintain their big-screen presence on the small screen.
