Confession time: Though I owned the game, I never really played Battleship growing up because I kinda thought it was boring. The only time I would ever pretend to be interested was if someone else was playing, because then I would jump in between and yell "You sunk my Battleship!" over and over again until someone punched me. Ah, the trials and tribulations of my awkward childhood. Years later, it seems Hollywood (and more specifically Universal) want to try to turn Battleship into an action-packed summer blockbuster, and Variety tells us that Hancock director Peter Berg has signed on to steer this mega ship toward a July 1, 2011 release date.

Battleship will mark the second film to be released under Universal's deal with Hasbro (the first being Stretch Armstrong, due out April 11, 2011), with more on the way including Monopoly, Candyland, Ouija and another big-screen version of Clue. There's no word on what this means for Hancock 2, though, since the Variety piece mentions that Berg will do Battleship so that he can then direct the Afghan war drama Lone Survivor. Will he now step off of Hancock 2 as director, but stay on as producer? Will Hancock 2 be filmed after these two movies are completed, pushing it to a potential 2012 or 2013 release date?

Still a bunch of unanswered questions, but in the meantime tell us your thoughts on the Battleship movie below. Do people still care about "ship movies" that don't star Johnny Depp?
