When Harry Potter decided to split up his final film into two parts, that decision paved the way for other studios to pull similar stunts with their big, long-lasting franchises. Naturally, Summit Entertainment is now trying to decide whether or not to split up the final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn, into two films – and a lot of their decision, I feel, will be based on whether they can talk Chris Weitz into directing both films back-to-back.
Variety says the job is Weitz's if he wants it, seeing as the studio and cast are extremely happy with the way he handled The Twilight Saga: New Moon (and the $200 million-and-counting box office haul doesn't hurt either). The only thing holding up the decision is the fact that all of the main actors only have deals in place for four films, and not five. So, that means Summit will seriously have to empty their wallets in order to secure the trio of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner (we're talking upwards of eight figures each!).
But then comes what may even be a tougher problem: How do you adapt the fairly dark and twisted Breaking Dawn so that it falls in line with the other films and is suitable for the same audience? From what I gather things get pretty hairy (and not all-too cinematic) in that final book – do you think it could be easily adapted to film? We do know that screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg will be back to write the final installment – the question now, though, centers on whether she'll be writing one more film or two?
