In the original Wall Street, Michael Douglas played a high-powered stockbroker who mentors a young hot shot (played by Charlie Sheen) looking to make his mark in the industry. Now, over 20 years later, a sequel to Wall Street – called Money Never Sleeps --- is starting to heat up, with Michael Douglas reprising his career-defining (and Oscar-winning) role as Gordon Gekko. The film had been hibernating for awhile, but today Variety tells us that Oliver Stone has signed on to direct – even though he'd been vocal about not wanting to be involved in the past.
Not only that, but Shia LaBeouf is in talks to take a role similar to the one Charlie Sheen played in the original; that of a young, slick, up-and-coming stockbroker looking to make waves. All parties feel now is the perfect time to make a Wall Street sequel, especially considering the fact that part of the reason we're currently in a recession is due to rampant greed on Wall Street. I wonder if Gekko will stand by his "Greed is Good" mantra from the first film, or if we'll find an older, wiser character who's looking to do right what he made wrong.
What do you think of a Wall Street sequel? Is now the perfect time to make one, or do you think it's a little bit sleazy to capitalize on the recession?
