Proving to be a popular hit doesn't always guarantee awards consideration, yet Joker is poised to grab further attention in the coming weeks and months. While critical opinions continue to differ, nearly everyone agrees that Joaquin Phoenix gives a stunning performance as Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker.

As more people see Joker, we expect that talk about award possibilities will increase. Meanwhile, two other films have generated special buzz from early screenings at film festivals, while another looks quite awards-worthy, judging by the spectacular trailer and the talent lined up in front of and behind the camera. Here, then, are three awards contenders, coming soon to theaters.

Jojo Rabbit

During World War II, a young boy imagines that Hitler is his friend, leading to unexpected complications when his mother (Scarlett Johsnsson) begins hiding a young Jewish girl in their home. It’s a wild premise for an awards-contender, but director Taika Waititi delivers comedy gold playing Hitler, as well as dramatic substance from everything else in the handsomely-mounted production.
