Amazon: Online retailer Amazon.com, which has ben enjoying success producing original small-screen programming such as the Golden Globe-winning Transparent (above), says it will begin producing and acquiring original movies for theatrical distribution in 2015. The projects will be lower budgeted, in the neighborhood of $5 million to $25 million per title, and will be available on Amazon's streaming service four to eight weeks after debuting in theaters. The Experimenter

The Experimenter: Peter Sarsgaard stars in The Experimenter as real-life social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who devised a study in 1961 to test a theory about blind obedience to orders. Winona Ryder costars; John Leguizamo, Anton Yelchin and Anthony Edwards are among the subjects of the experiment. The movie will debut at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend. [EW.com]

 

Mud

Detour: Tye Sheridan, who gave an impressive turn in 2012's Mud (opposite Matthew McConaughey, above), is proving to be a young actor in demand. Sheridan, now 18, appears in three films debuting at this month's Sundance Film Festival and will next star in psychological thriller Detour. He'll play a young man who, "while grieving for his dying mother, struggles to decide whether he should kill his unfaithful stepfather." [The Hollywood Reporter]
