New Release Dates For Movies Postponed Due To Coronavirus

Due to the worldwide threat of the COVID-19 coronavirus, several upcoming movie releases have had their theatrical releases postponed. Some of these films have new release dates for later this year or in 2021. Others are indefinitely on hold. We’ll be updating this list if more titles and new dates are announced.

If you bought advance tickets on Fandango to an upcoming movie with a postponed release date, a refund or exchange will be issued in the coming days. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patronage.

Wonder Woman 1984

Release Date: August 14 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

Gal Gadot returns as the DC Comics superhero Wonder Woman in this sequel directed by Patty Jenkins. Warner Bros. has moved the release date for the 1980s-set action movie from June 5 to August 14.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Release Date: July 2, 2021 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

Universal’s sequel to Minions, itself a prequel to the Despicable Me franchise, again focuses on everyone’s favorite yellow henchmen. The studio has moved the animated feature from its original July 3 release by a year, to July 2, 2021.

Black Widow

Release Date: November 6, 2020 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

The next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe spotlights the titular Avenger played by Scarlett Johansson. Disney postponed the superhero blockbuster from its start-of-summer release date of May 1. The movie will now open on November 6.

Trolls World Tour 

Release Date: April 10 on FandangoNOW

In this sequel to 2016’s Trolls, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) set out on a mission to stop a rocker King and Queen from destroying all the other music in the land. Universal will be making the film available at-home on the same day it is set to release in theaters.

A Quiet Place Part II

Release Date: September 4, 2020 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

The sequel to A Quiet Place was meant to open around the same time as the original successfully debuted back in 2018. With director John Krasinski directly stating that he wants fans to see this one with a crowd, Paramount delayed the horror movie from its planned March 20 release date. Now it’s set to open nearly six months later, on September 4.

Disney’s live-action reimagining of their 1998 animated classic was to open in the U.S. on March 27. The non-musical, martial-arts-heavy action movie will now open on the big screen on July 24, marking the studio’s return to movie theaters.

New Release Date: April 2, 2021 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

The 10th feature installment of the Fast & Furious franchise (including spin-offs), this sequel starring Vin Diesel, John Cena and Charlize Theron was scheduled to open on May 22 of this year. Universal decided to hold the action blockbuster back, setting its new U.S. release date as April 2, 2021.

The New Mutants

This comic book adaptation about young mutants trapped in a secret facility was initially intended to be part of the X-Men movie franchise and was once set for release in early 2018. Disney had finally set the teen superhero feature for April 3 of this year, but now has pulled the title again indefinitely.

No Time to Die

New Release Date: November 25, 2020 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

MGM has delayed the release of the 25th installment of the James Bond movie franchise. The final 007 film starring Daniel Craig will now open this fall, setting a new U.S. release for November 25.

From the producers of Get Out, this horror movie stars Moonlight’s Janelle Monae as an author transported back to the time of slavery in America. Lionsgate has delayed its release indefinitely.

The Saw franchise returns with a new chapter conceived by and starring Chris Rock, who also plays a homicide detective investigating terribly twisted murders. Lionsgate has postponed its release until further notice.

The Woman in the Window

This adaptation of A.J. Finn’s bestselling novel stars Amy Adams as an agoraphobe who may have witnessed a murder. Disney and 20th Century Studios have postponed its opening from May 15 until further notice.

The Lovebirds

Release: Netflix (date TBD) 

Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani star in this action-comedy from director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick). Paramount was supposed to premiere the movie at the SXSW Film Festival before its cancellation and then release nationwide on April 3. Paramount recently announced that The Lovebirds would instead premiere on Netflix. No new release date has been set.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

New Release Date: January 15, 2021 (sign up for a FanAlert here)

Sony had previously moved this family film sequel based on the stories of Beatrix Potter only four months, to August 7, in place of the original date of April 3. The live-action/animation hybrid has been pushed again, to January 15, 2021.

Sarah Paulson stars in this thriller as a homeschooling mother keeping some mysterious dark secret from her daughter. Lionsgate has postponed its release until further notice.

In the Heights

This New York City set musical based on the stage production by Lin-Manuel Miranda was scheduled for theatrical release on June 26. Warner Bros. has now pushed its opening back indefinitely.

James Wan, co-creator of the Saw franchise and director of Aquaman, returns to horror with this movie that was set for theatrical release on August 14. Warner Bros. has delayed the opening indefinitely.

Scooby-Doo and his mystery-solving friends were expected to be returning to the big screen in animated feature form on May 15, but Warner Bros. has postponed the movie’s release until further notice.

Saint Maud

A24 was to release this British horror movie, which is about a possibly possessed hospice nurse, in the U.S. on April 10. The distributor has postponed the opening until further notice.

Release Date: October 23, 2020

Kevin Hart stars in this single-father drama from director Paul Weitz (About a Boy). The first title to be pushed up as a result of production delays, the movie will now release on October 23, 2020 rather than January 15, 2021.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The latest installment of the Ghostbusters franchise was to be a summer release on July 10, 2020. The sequel, which is helmed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, is now scheduled to open on March 5, 2021.

Tom Hanks plays another World War II commander in this naval drama with potential for Oscar consideration. Sony has indefinitely postponed its release from a planned summer 2020 date of June 12.

Sony’s next Spider-Verse-set Marvel movie, which stars Jared Leto as the titular antihero vampire from comics, was to open on July 31, 2020. The studio rescheduled the summer blockbuster hopeful to March 19, 2021.

Release Date: October 8, 2021

Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland star in this video game adaptation based on the Sony Playstation franchise of the same name. Due to production delays, the action/adventure movie has been moved from March 5, 2021 to October 8, 2021.

Untitled Sony/Marvel Movie

Release Date: TBD

Sony’s unidentified Marvel Comics adaptation that was slated for October 8, 2021, has now been postponed with a new date to be determined.


The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

Release Date: July 31, 2020 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

The latest SpongeBob SquarePants movie follows everyone’s favorite burger-flipping sea sponge as he embarks on an adventure to Atlantic City find his kidnapped pet snail. Paramount has moved the computer-animated family movie’s release from May 22 to July 31.

The Tomorrow War

Release Date: TBD

Director Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) makes his live-action feature debut with this sci-fi action movie, which stars Chris Pratt as a soldier from the past brought to the future to fight an alien invasion. Paramount had planned for a Christmas 2020 release, but now it’s been delayed indefinitely.

Top Gun: Maverick

Release Date: December 23, 2020 (Sign up for a FanAlert here)

Tom Cruise returns as “Maverick,” the naval pilot with a need for speed, in a sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun. This time he’s tasked with training the son (Miles Teller) of his best friend and partner, “Goose," who died in the first movie. Paramount changed the movie’s release date from June 24 to December 23.

Artemis Fowl

Release: Disney+ (date TBD)

Disney’s adaptation of the popular fantasy novel series by Eoin Colfer co-stars Josh Gad and Dame Judi Dench as mythological creatures in a story of a young criminal mastermind. The studio will no longer open the movie theatrically as planned on May 29, 2020, and will instead release it to the streaming service Disney+ on some undetermined date.


Bob’s Burgers: The Movie

Release Date: April 9, 2021

This animated feature spin-off from the popular Fox TV series will take the Belcher family and their restaurant to the big screen. Disney and Fox have delayed its release from July 17, 2020, until April 9, 2021.

Jordan Peele co-wrote and produced this sequel/reboot of the 1992 horror movie of the same name. MGM has pushed back the Nia DaCosta-helmed release from June 12 to September 25.

Captain Marvel 2

Release Date: July 8, 2022

This sequel to the hit 2019 installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was previously only listed as “Untitled Marvel Movie” and set for release on July 29, 2022. Disney has moved this one up almost a month, opening the superhero movie instead on July 8, 2022.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Release Date: November 5, 2021

This Doctor Strange sequel brings back Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular mystical superhero for another installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney has moved its release date from May 7, 2021, to November 5, 2021.

Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden and Gemma Chan star in this installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe about a team of superheroes consisting of immortal beings. Disney has moved the movie’s release from November 6, 2020, to February 12, 2021.

Free Guy

Ryan Reynolds stars in this action comedy about a bank teller who discovers he’s just a background character in a violent video game. Disney and Fox have pushed the movie’s release from July 3 to December 11.

The French Dispatch

The latest star-studded ensemble comedy from indie auteur Wes Anderson is about a fictional famous newspaper and includes Bill Murray, Elisabeth Moss, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton among its cast. Disney and Fox have postponed its release from July 24 to October 16.

Indiana Jones 5

Release Date: July 29, 2022

Harrison Ford returns as iconic archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones in this sequel, which will be directed by James Mangold taking over from Steven Spielberg. Disney pushed its release back more than a year, from July 9, 2021, to July 29, 2022.

Jungle Cruise

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in this action-adventure movie based on the iconic Disney theme park ride of the same name. Originally scheduled to open on July 24, 2020, the release has now been delayed about a year, until July 30, 2021.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Release Date: May 7, 2021

Simu Liu stars as the titular superhero and “Master of Kung-Fu” in this installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney has pushed the release of the movie from February 12, 2021, to May 7, 2021. 


Thor: Love and Thunder

Release Date: February 18, 2022

This fourth Thor movie, which will also be the 29th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, brings back not only Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian thunder but also director Taika Waititi at the helm. Disney has moved its release date from November 5, 2021, to February 18, 2022.

Untitled Marvel Movie

Release Date: TBD

This unknown installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was intended to come out on February 18, 2022. The untitled blockbuster has tentatively been removed from Disney’s release calendar.

This supernatural horror movie, which is directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass), produced by Guillermo del Toro and stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons, was set for release on April 17. Disney and Fox Searchlight Pictures have postponed its opening until further notice.

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Dev Patel stars in the titular role of this adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel from Veep creator Armando Iannucci. Disney and Searchlight Pictures have canceled its planned release for May 8 and will open sometime in the future.

The Artist’s Wife

Strand Releasing is the distributor of this indie drama, which has been on the festival circuit since last year. The movie stars Bruce Dern as a famous artist with dementia and Lena Olin as his wife. Originally intended to start its limited release in New York City on April 3 with Los Angeles and San Francisco openings later in the month, all bookings are now delayed until further notice.

Blue Story

Paramount is the distributor of this British crime thriller for its U.S. release, which was set for March 20 before postponement. The movie, which opened in the UK last fall, is the directorial debut of the music artist known as Rapman, who based it on his YouTube channel and narrates the story in rap form.


Nina Wu

This Taiwanese drama about a small-town actress who moves to the city to pursue her dreams, premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and was set for release in the U.S. on March 20. The movie’s distributor, Film Movement, has postponed its opening but has not yet determined its new date. 


The Truth (La Vérité)

From the Palme d’Or-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters), this drama stars Catherine Deneuve as a French movie star and Juliette Binoche as her daughter. IFC Films was to begin a limited release on March 20 but now plans a summer release, though no exact date is known.

The Climb

Sony Pictures Classics was scheduled to release this drama, which is about two men who were the closest of friends until one of them had an affair with the other’s fiancee, on March 20. The opening is now delayed for several months. 


On A Magical Night

The latest from French filmmaker Christophe Honoré (Love Songs, Ma Mere), which premiered at Cannes last year, stars Chiara Mastroianni as a woman unhappy in her marriage who takes new perspective on her life. Strand Releasing had a limited release set for March 27 but it’s delayed until further notice.

Oscar-winning actor Jean Dujardin stars in this black comedy from Quentin Dupieux (Rubber) as a man obsessed with his deerskin jacket. Greenwich Entertainment was originally set to release the French film in limited theaters on March 20.


The Grizzlies

Inuit students take up lacrosse in this drama set in the Arctic. Elevation Pictures was set to put the movie out on March 20 but has postponed its release.


Radium Girls

Based on a true story, this drama follows sisters who become ill while working at a radium factory and uncover a corporate cover-up. Juno Films was to open the movie in limited release on April 3 but have postponed until further notice.


The Secret: Dare to Dream

Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas star in this romantic drama based on the self-help book The Secret. Roadside Attractions has removed the movie from its April 17 release date and postponed the movie’s opening indefinitely.

Nuestras Madres

Release Date: TBD

This Cannes winner, also known as Our Mothers, focuses on the aftermath of the Guatemalan civil war. Outsider Pictures was set to put the drama out on April 3 but has delayed its U.S. release.


Cut Throat City

The latest from rapper-turned-filmmaker RZA stars Terrence Howard, T.I., Shameik Moore, Wesley Snipes, Ethan Hawke and Eiza Gonzalez in an action-packed heist film set in New Orleans just after Hurricane Katrina. Well Go USA Entertainment has postponed its release, originally set for April 10.
