Jack Reacher Fans of the Lee Child thriller series were furious back when the casting of Tom Cruise in the titular role was announced ("Reacher's 6'5", 250 lbs., blond, and huge!" they whined). But Cruise, to most people's pleasant surprise, managed to pull the role off, with more than a little help from writer-director Christopher McQuarrie's (The Usual Suspects) script and an awesome (did I say awesome) villain in director Werner Herzog, who steals the show despite minimal screen time. Our hero (anti-hero?) is a former military investigator who's off the grid until he gets pulled into a case involving a supposed sniper he's familiar with--but who may or may not actually be the killer of five people on the Pittsburgh streets. The movie feels old-school, with everything you'd expect and want -- mano a mano combat, frenetic car chases, shootouts, a ridiculous climax, all that good stuff. Extras: Cruise/McQuarrie commentary, three featurettes on the weapons and how Child's book One Shot was turned into this film.
