Ahead of Sunday’s Oscar ceremony, Fandango surveyed over 7,000 moviegoers, asking them which nominated films deserve to win. We polled fans on six major categories including Best Picture, Director and the four acting categories. Best Picture was a tight race with the top four results within 5% of each other, but it was The Shape of Water that won out with 19% of the vote.

Similarly, Guillermo Del Toro (The Shape of Water) barely managed to beat out Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk) for Best Director. Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis weighed in on this outcome, “Fandango moviegoers give a slight edge to the beautifully-realized fantasy, The Shape of Water, and its visionary director Guillermo Del Toro for top honors, for this unexpectedly uplifting romance  with a lot of heart and even more imagination.”

The survey for Best Supporting Actress actually resulted in a tie between frontrunner Allison Janney (I, Tonya) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water). The other acting categories had clear winners including Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) for Best Actor and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) for Best Actress.
