Gal Gadot Wonder Woman

The Oscar nominations were announced early this morning and the internet has been abuzz with a wide range of reactions ever since. Of course, most of these takes come in the form of snubs and surprises. Fandango has already taken the collective pulse of moviegoers to find out which nominations were shocking and what films they felt were overlooked. We surveyed over 1,000 movie fans to weigh in on both sides of the debate. Here are the results:

Biggest Oscar Nomination Snubs, According to Moviegoers:

  • Wonder Woman shut out in all categories (39%)
  • James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Best Actor (10%)
  • Tom Hanks (The Post), Best Actor (9%)
  • Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), Best Actress (7%)
  • Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Best Director (6%)

Happiest Oscar Nomination Surprises, According to Moviegoers:

  • Logan for Best Adapted Screenplay (38%)
  • Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Best Actor (20%)
  • Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.), Best Actor (16%)
  • Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World), Best Supporting Actor (13%)
  • Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Best Supporting Actress (8%)

It shouldn’t be all too surprising that movie fans feel the most passionate about superheroes (our annual poll of most anticipated films made that very clear). Superhero movies dominated both sides of the feedback; Wonder Woman not earning a single nomination was voted as the Academy’s biggest oversight this year. On the the other hand, visitors rejoiced over Logan getting a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay, becoming the first superhero film to do so.

Most of the other picks came from the four acting categories where big names like James Franco (The Disaster Artist) and Tom Hanks (The Post) were shut out while lesser known actors like Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) were given the spotlight. Another surprise is Christopher Plummer, who famously filled in a supporting role on Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World just weeks before its theatrical release.
