If you thought X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the last we’d see of all those wacky mutants, think again: 20th Century Fox is already planning a film called X-Men: First Class, which will act as a prequel to the first three X-Men films … we think. All these prequels, sequels and remakes get confusing sometimes, but what it looks like is X-Men: First Class will follow the trials and tribulations of the first class of mutants at Xavier’s school.
During an interview on Fox’s "Life After Film School", producer Lauren Schuler-Donner had this to say about the latest X-Men franchise: "It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that'll be really fun. I think [the plan] is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world. And hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up."
They may have already planted some of the seeds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, since that film obviously takes place before Wolverine becomes a member of the X-Men and the movie even features a young Cyclops – which means it may already set up X-Men: First Class as the next logical chapter in the X-Men movie universe. I’d be interested to see how they plan to jump from one X-Men franchise to another, though – and to be honest it could become hard to keep track of them all. But the X-Men universe is so large that it’d be a shame if the films stopped here.
Which X-Men characters would you like to see show up on the big screen moving forward?
