As if we ever doubted Meryl Streep’s versatility. The Oscar-winning actress looks positively crazy in the first image from Into the Woods, director Rob Marshall’s silver screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Walt Disney Studios shared this pic with us below:

It came with this description:

“Meryl Streep ventures Into the Woods as the Witch who wishes to reverse a curse so that her beauty may be restored. The humorous and heartfelt musical, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, explores the consequences of the quests of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, and the witch who cast a spell on them.”

Into the Woods won several Tony Awards in 1988, including Best Score, Best Book and Best Actress in a Musical for Joanna Gleason. It has been revived and toured numerous times, but a movie adaptation has yet to be attempted.

Marshall seems like the right man for the job. His directorial credits include the Oscar-winning Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine (also a Broadway musical adaptation). And he has surrounded Streep with an unbelievable cast, including Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick, who’ll play Cinderella.

Into the Woods reaches theaters on December 25, 2014. What an outstanding Christmas gift for Broadway-musical enthusiasts and film lovers worldwide.
